About The Cashew

The Cashew opened on May 6th, 2005. Founder, Richard Alan Kenny, established The Cashew with two of his close friends. At the time, Rich also owned The Peanut, Kansas City’s oldest bar, located at 5000 Main St, which opened in 1933. Rich and his partners agreed to open something similar to The Peanut, but wanted it to be more upscale, thus, “The Cashew” name. Rich and his partners loved the Crossroads Art District location. As a result, The Cashew has become the “place to be” for every First Friday.

On January 31st, 2007, Rich passed away from Pancreatic Cancer. From his roots in Letcher, South Dakota, Rich learned to play Cribbage, a game that he loved and taught many people to play. Every year on August 20th, Rich’s birthday, or “Richmas,” The Cashew hosts a memorial Cribbage Tournament in his honor benefiting the American Cancer Society. Everyone is welcomed to come and play. Rich is deeply missed by everyone who was lucky enough to have known him. Rich’s partners still own The Cashew today.

About the Building

Our building was built in 1915 by a retired WWI Colonel to manufacture and sell tires in competition with The Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, which was located across the street to the east. Since that time, it has gone through many tenants. It has been everything from a manufacturer’s representative building, Finn’s Exotic Boot Store, Carrol Seating (a church and school seating and cabinet store), and loft apartments. This building has seen many different businesses come and go, but with any luck (and with the help of our crack staff), it will remain The Cashew for a very long time.
